Google just announced a new, super neat update that will put you in the spotlight the next time you sign in to a Meet video call.
After more than two years of working from home, many of us are still trying to find the best WFH desk configuration. First of all, the monitor of our computer must be in a convenient place to avoid unnecessary load. For many people, this means that when it comes to videoconferencing, they may not be in the best position on the screen.
In the latest update, Google Meet can now automatically frame a participant before joining the meeting, thanks to digital zoom to trim the subject closer, helping to eliminate distractions around it.
Keep track of topics in Google Meet
On his Blog about workspace updates (opens in a new tab)Google says this only happens once, so there is no automatic object tracking in the same way as with the iPad Pro’s mid-scene (which is based on the latest hardware).
This is done so that the camera view doesn’t constantly move while you move, which can be distracting, however the help article says that users can open the settings panel to change the focus when needed while talking.
For now, availability is limited to Chrome M91 or Edge 91, meaning Safari users won’t be able to access this feature.
Deployment has already started, but some users may not see it in their accounts until the end of November. Supported account types are Workspace Business Standard / Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials / Starter / Standard / Plus, Education Plus / Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Workspace Individual, however a supported device is also required – more on that Google help page (opens in a new tab).
